The Importance of Lighting in Your North Carolina Home

As an interior designer, I can't stress enough the importance of lighting in every space of your home. Lighting is not just about illuminating a room. It's an essential tool in creating the right atmosphere and enhancing the overall aesthetic of your space. In this post, I want to focus on chandeliers, lamps and accent lighting and share with you some of the benefits of lighting in various spaces of your home.

Chandeliers are a great way to add elegance and sophistication to any room.   They can be used as a focal point in a dining room or living room and can set the tone for the entire space. They come in a variety of styles, from traditional to modern, and can be customized to fit any decor.  In this space we added a semi-flush mount light over the sink area that coordinates with the breakfast nook chandelier.  Additionally, can you tell we were inspired by the chandelier's design when we created this custom accent railing?

Lamps are another essential lighting fixture that every space should have. They provide a soft, warm glow that can create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Table lamps are perfect for reading nooks or as a bedside table accessory, while floor lamps are ideal for illuminating dark corners and creating a focal point in a room.  This is still one of my favorite bedrooms to date!  So cozy yet sophisticated.

Finally, let's talk about accent lighting. Accent lighting is the perfect way to highlight architectural features or artwork in your home. It can create drama and depth in a space by casting shadows and adding texture. It's a great way to showcase your personal style and add a unique touch to your space. Our client loved highlighting her favorite pup!

We love creating custom lighting plans for our clients.

The right lighting adds beauty to any space and our talented trade team will make it happen.

Don't underestimate the power of lighting; consider hiring an interior designer to help you create the perfect lighting plan for your space. Tell us in the comments your favorite lighting from the pictures we’ve shared.

Whether you are in Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Burlington, Mebane, Hillsborough, or Pittsboro, lighting is always essential!

How does it work anyway?

5 Benefits of Custom Curtains for Your Chapel Hill Home

First of all let’s get one thing straight….they are draperies, not curtains, especially when they are CUSTOM :)

When it comes to enhancing the beauty and functionality of your home, custom drapery emerges as a timeless and elegant choice. While off-the-shelf curtains have their place, custom drapery takes your interior design to the next level. At Inviting Interiors, we understand the transformative power of tailor-made window treatments.  It’s becoming a bit of a lost art, but we have the right professionals to take your window treatments to the next level.

1. Unmatched Personalization:

Every home is unique and so are your style preferences. Custom drapery allows you to express your personality through fabric selection, color, texture and design.  We love being able to bring these fabrics directly to your home.  So you can touch, feel and SEE what these fabrics look like in your space.

2. Perfect Fit:

Off-the-shelf curtains often come in standard sizes, leaving you with ill-fitting window treatments that compromise aesthetics and functionality. On the other hand, custom drapery is meticulously measured and tailored to fit your windows flawlessly. This precision ensures that your drapes hang beautifully and provide optimal light control and privacy.

3. Superior Quality:

Quality matters when it comes to window treatments. Custom drapery is crafted with precision and attention to detail, using high-quality materials that stand the test of time. We partner with top-of-the-line fabric suppliers to deliver drapery that looks exquisite and withstands the rigors of daily life.

4. Enhanced Energy Efficiency:

Custom drapery can contribute to a more energy-efficient home. Depending on your fabric choice, draperies can insulate your space, helping to regulate indoor temperatures. In hot summers they can block out heat, while in chilly winters they can prevent heat loss, ultimately reducing energy bills.  We also offer a wide selection of motorized roller shades and draperies as well for the ultimate upgraded look and technical capabilities. 5. Unique Design Elements:

Custom drapery allows you to incorporate unique design elements that truly set your home apart. Whether it's adding decorative trims, coordinating tiebacks or layering drapes with sheers or blinds, you can create a one-of-a-kind look that adds depth and character to your space.

Custom drapery is not just a window covering, it's a design statement that elevates the aesthetics and functionality of your home. When you choose custom drapery, you invest in a unique, high-quality solution that enhances your home's elegance, comfort and energy efficiency. Get ready to transform your windows into works of art with our expert guidance and impeccable craftsmanship.

When to Refinish or Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets in North Carolina

This article will discuss various factors that can help determine when it’s worth refinishing or replacing your kitchen cabinets.  We’ll look at how age, aesthetics, functionality, convenience and investment amount all play a role.  Let's start with age.

If made with durable material, such as hardwood, the age of your cabinets may not matter.  A fresh coat of paint and new pulls may be all that’s needed to bring your cabinets up to date.  Age may be more of a factor if your cabinets are worn out.  It’s not to say that a good craftsman may not have some tricks up his/her sleeve that could adequately address your concerns, but often the investment of such renovations can outweigh the benefits of purchasing new cabinets.

Aesthetics is an easy one!  Just ask yourself the following questions: Do I like looking at it?  How does it make me feel (also impacted by functionality, discussed below)? Is it something I’m proud to bring guests into?  Is it even my style? Simply put, aesthetics equate to your preferred look.  So when determining the best option, refinishing or replacing your cabinets, consider which is more or less likely to bring about that WOW factor!

Now that we’ve considered age and aesthetics let's talk about functionality.  Maybe this is your chance to finally make it your own, including colors, style and functionality.  In this case, cabinet organizers could help.  But what if you are ready to make it YOURS?  Kitchens are a place to “make it happen,” whatever it is!  There’s nothing more annoying than having a poor layout, broken drawers and doors and barriers to organization.  Comfort and time are valuable.  Smooth transitions and operational features = functionality.  So, replacing your cabinets may be your only viable option to get the functionality you need.

Convenience, time and disruption to the home environment should also be considered when choosing between refinishing or replacing kitchen cabinets. Which approach would take less time? But you may be surprised to learn that it’s a tossup!  Due to the prep work and possible repairs mentioned above (including multiple coats of primer and paint - which take time to dry), refinishing cabinets could take several weeks.  On the other hand, tearing out and replacing cabinets (should rerouting plumbing or electrical be necessary) could take the same amount of time.  Replacing cabinets is often a part of a full kitchen remodel, which usually requires more time than a refinish.

Age, aesthetics, functionality, convenience and investment amount are all factors to consider when refinishing or replacing kitchen cabinets.  After reading this article, if you are still having difficulty deciding between a cabinet refinish or replacement, or if you are ready to move forward in designing or building your dream kitchen.

Sentimental Storage for people in North Carolina

Spring is HERE and if you are like me, you find yourself cleaning out closets and trying to get things organized around your home.

Inevitably, sentimental items pop up when you are sifting through all the things. A few years ago I hosted a decluttering group in which we focused on storing our sentimental items.

These storage bags are perfect for holding special clothing, shoes, and other small sentimental items from my babies. Each child has their own labeled bag and inside the bag is a handwritten letter from me. A little story or memory from each item, another form of intentional connection between us.

What I loved about this process was giving myself permission to keep the things I really cherished, with the purpose of sharing those special items with my kids. Everything else seemed less special and was easy to let go of. Donating gently used items to women’s shelters is a great way to pass along items that can be used again.

Oh goodness! We love our Baby Jae!

Special Note. I have cedar shavings in a little sachet for each bag. Something like THIS would work well to keep items in great (smelling) condition.

Upholstery Refresh for my house in Graham, North Carolina

Spring is upon us and I am in the MOOD to CLEAN! I started with the sofa…here are a few things to help you get started too! See links in text.

First things first, I removed all the cushions and vacuumed with THIS So far I love it! Light weight, perfect for small jobs and I know I will use it for the car as well. Rechargeable, has USB plug and easy to clean out the filter…plus 40% off coupon when you add it to your cart!

Next I began working on stains. Pretty sure someone spilled something here and never cleaned it up :( THIS stuff works so well! Spray it on, little bit of elbow grease and it looks tons better. I use these on my tennis shoes as well.

A fabric shaver like THIS can help get rid of any piling on your upholstery. I hope you get some helpful inspiration to tackle an upholstered piece in your home!

Quest's Room Makeover

Once our renovation was complete we were so anxious to get EVERYONE in their OWN spaces I didn’t really get to finish Quest’s room exactly the way I wanted, and he deserved. Remember, the (3) kids were sharing 1 bedroom and Jon and I slept in the living room/kitchen for 6 months…how did we even do that LOL.

Fast forward about a year and I was finally ready to give him the room he requested. “Nature half, Star Wars half and little bit Super Hero”

Here ya go, Buddy.

I got rid of the little loveseat, as it was not used and this space needed more storage! The Armoire now holds clothes, toys and “weapons” :o)

I started by clearing the floor, throwing away trash + broken toys + removing clothing he had outgrown. I flipped the bed position, which really opened up more floor space. Utilized rolling storage for LEGOS as he plays with these often. Gave him extra baskets and bins for easily putting away toys. He even has a little drawer for all his special items.

Click each picture below for links to a few of Q’s Favorite Things.

Rolling Bookcase (similar)

Beddy’s! I love this bedding. We use them for the girls rooms as well. Easy to wash, kids can make their own beds + covers stay on the bed!

Any and Everything Star Wars LEGO

Not just Quest’s favorite, but we love these too! Easy to play inside or outside, no need for the chest vests…everything is inside the gun. Super fun! And these are on SALE…(similar)

He love Groovy Joe! Silly, Sing-Songy type books. Also anything animal related.

I bought the Medium Size with the Canvas Stars…so many patterns to choose from!

Rusty Roof in North Carolina

One day after we completed the stairs it was time to for a new roof. The addition portion, front porch and the covered “walkway” leading up to the side entry all had to be done. We went back and forth a bit discussing the new color. We considered black but I just didn’t feel good about that and didn’t want the cabin to look like a trendy farmhouse. (nothing against a trendy farmhouse…just not the look we were going for) We settled on just the regular metal, like it had been before.

I told the roofer how much I loved the rust on the roof. This little cabin has had THE LIFE, it’s been places, and I love that it looks worn. He assured me this new roof would never rust, and not gonna lie, I was kind of bummed.

You can see the difference in the new metal and the old!

You can see the difference in the new metal and the old!

The actual pitch of the roof will be replaced with new metal during Phase 2. We didn’t want to disrupt the entire house while we were still living here. The pitch portion will come off this spring and we will have new insulation blown in as well. We DID however save all the old rusty tin….more on that to come.

I love the sound of rain on a metal/tin roof. And I have a feeling I will like the rain even more when we can get a little grass to grown again :)
